Autumn 1

This Half Term

The key text we will be focusing on this Half Term is 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes  

We will be reading the text and picking the text apart in our RAID lessons. We will be also discussing the different comprehension components as well as why the author has chosen to write the text in the way he has and the impact that it has on the story.

In English we will be looking at a variety of books and writing different text types around these.

Maths

This term, the children will develop their understanding of numbers up to 10,000. They will learn to represent, partition, compare and order numbers, use number lines, and find 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 more or less.

They will also learn about Roman numerals and practise rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.

We are delighted to share with you an overview of the exciting learning your child will be undertaking this term. We have planned a range of engaging topics and activities across the curriculum, providing opportunities for the children to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding.

History
In History, we will begin by learning about the Anglo-Saxons, exploring their settlements, daily lives, beliefs and kingdoms. We will investigate fascinating artefacts, including those found at Sutton Hoo, and discover the lasting impact the Anglo-Saxons have had on Britain, particularly through our language and place names.

We will then move on to the Vikings, where the children will develop important historical skills. They will learn to read and create timelines, identify significant individuals and explore cause and effect. They will also learn how to research using different sources, understand the difference between primary and secondary sources, and ask questions about how and why things have changed over time.

Science
In Science, we will continue our learning about Electricity before moving on to States of Matter. The children will explore solids, liquids and gases and develop their understanding of their properties.

Religious Education (RE)
In RE, we will explore the question “What is it like to be a Hindu?” We will also look at how religious stories can help us understand different ways of caring for others, with a focus on Christianity.

Physical Education (PE)
In PE, we will develop our skills in basketball and tennis. The children will have opportunities to improve their coordination, movement, teamwork and sporting skills.

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
In French, we will learn how to use numbers up to 20 and practise talking about food we would like to eat.

Jigsaw (PSHE)
During our Jigsaw lessons, we will focus on ourselves and celebrating differences. We will encourage the children to recognise what makes each person unique and to value and respect the differences between us.

Computing
In Computing, we will be developing our programming skills using Scratch. The children will learn about algorithms and use code to make a sprite move and respond to instructions.

Art
In Art, we will first develop our drawing skills, exploring shading and texture and learning how to use different media appropriately. We will then focus on painting, including colour mixing, before creating a final piece inspired by the Impressionist style.

Music
In Music, we will learn the Gospel song ‘This Little Light of Mine’ and explore the pentatonic scale. We will then investigate music inspired by colour and art.

Design and Technology (DT)
In DT, the children will be designing, creating and evaluating mechanisms. They will have the opportunity to develop their practical skills while exploring how different mechanisms work.

We are very much looking forward to an enjoyable and productive term and hope that the children will continue to be enthusiastic, curious and engaged in their learning.
